FIA European Drag Racing Championship returns to action at Tierp Arena

The FIA European Drag Racing Championship kicks off the second part of the season with the Summit Racing Equipment Internationals at Tierp Arena, Sweden. After the opening round at Santa Pod Raceway it was quiet for a while, but with three races in the span of four weeks, the drivers and teams of the most prestigious drag racing championship in Europe will have no time to relax. Antti Horto (Top Fuel), Sandro Bellio (Top Methanol) and Jan Ericsson (Pro Modified) were the winners in England and are the leaders in their respective categories. At Tierp Arena the frontrunners will meet even tougher competition then they had at Santa Pod, and they will have to perform at their very best to remain their leading positions.

Strong start of the season for David Vegter with runner-up position at The Main Event

David Vegter can look back on one of his best ever starts of a season. At Santa Pod Raceway the Dutchman claimed the runner-up position at The Main Event, the opening round of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship. On his road to the final, Vegter and the Vegter Pro Mod Racing ’67 Chevrolet Camaro improved their elapsed times on almost every run. This once again proved that after all the updates and modifications, the team made major steps in the right direction during the weekend. In the final Vegter had to acknowledge that reigning European Pro Modified champion and European recordholder Jan Ericsson from Sweden was a bit quicker.

Deserved winners and records broken at The Main Event at Santa Pod Raceway

After a 2-year break, the FIA European Drag Racing Championship is back on track again. And what a start it was with The Main Event at Santa Pod Raceway. Reigning Pro Modified and Top Methanol champions Jan Ericsson and Sandro Bellio made their first move to retain their titles by claiming victory in their respective categories. As icing on the cake, Ericsson also reset the European Pro Modified ET record to 5.724 seconds. In the Top Fuel category Antti Horto was the winner, but Ida Zetterström made headlines with a new European record and made history by recording the first 3.7-second run in Europe with a stunning 3.782 seconds.

Antti Horto, Sandro Bellio and Jan Ericsson winners at season-opening The Main Event at Santa Pod Raceway

Antti Horto raced to victory by defeating rookie and new European record holder Ida Zetterström in an all-Finnish Top Fuel final at Santa Pod Raceway. Jan Ericsson, from Sweden, defeated David Vegter from The Netherlands to take the win in Pro Modified. In the Top Methanol final reigning champion Sandro Bellio took the win and is the leader in the championship after the season-opening race of the 2022 FIA European Drag Racing Championship.

Ida Zetterström, Sandro Bellio and Nick Davies leaders after the first day of qualifying for The Main Event at Santa Pod Raceway

Ida Zetterström raced to the number one qualifying position in Top Fuel at the first day of qualifying for The Main Event, the first race of the 2022 FIA European Drag Racing Championship. The Top Fuel rookie recorded 4.14 seconds in her first run of the day. In Pro Modified local hero Nick Davies surprised with a great 5.921 seconds to take the lead. In Top Methanol reigning champion Sandro Bellio stormed to a great 5.54 seconds and is the provisional leader after day one.

The FIA European Drag Racing Championship kicks off with The Main Event

Only a few days to go and the 2022 FIA European Drag Racing Championship kicks off with The Main Event at Santa Pod Raceway. After the coronavirus caused a 2-year break, it’s finally time to get back to action for the most prestigious drag racing championship in Europe. Anita Mäkelä (Top Fuel), Sandro Bellio (Top Methanol), Jimmy Ålund (Pro Stock) and Jan Ericsson (Pro Modified) were the 2019, and due to the break still defending champions. Who will there be at the season opening round in England and who are the favourites? Will there be some new stars coming up, or will the more familiar names shine again?
