The European Finals and the 2022 season in review

It’s about three weeks since the 2022 FIA European Drag Racing Championship came to an end with The European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway. After a 2-year coronavirus break, finally new champions could be crowned, although three of them, Sandro Bellio, Jan Ericsson and Jimmy Ålund retained their titles as they were the reigning champions from 2019. Only Antti Horto in the Top Fuel category was crowned a new champion. Time for a final review of The European Finals and the 2022 title race.

Antti Horto, Jan Ericsson, Sandro Bellio and Jimmy Ålund clinch the 2022 FIA European Drag Racing Championship titles at Santa Pod

Antti Horto (Top Fuel), Sandro Bellio (Top Methanol), Jan Ericsson (Pro Modified) and Jimmy Ålund (Pro Stock) claimed the 2022 FIA European Drag Racing Championship titles in their respective category at the European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway. Bellio and Ericsson won their titles in style by claiming the victory in the final round of the 2022 FIA European Drag Racing Championship as well. Horto and Ålund also advanced to the final, but in Top Fuel Susanne Callin claimed the win, while in Pro Stock Michael Malmgren proved his great form of the weekend by defeating the 12-time Pro Stock champion.

Antti Horto, Sandro Bellio, Jan Ericsson and Michael Malmgren number one qualifiers at European Finals

Antti Horto (Top Fuel), Sandro Bellio (Top Methanol), Jan Ericsson (Pro Modified) and Michael Malmgren (Pro Stock) claimed the number one qualifying positions at the  European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway in England and will lead their respective categories into Sunday’s eliminations at the fourth and final round of the 2022 FIA European Drag Racing Championship.

Susanne Callin, Jan Ericsson, Daniel Jedborn and Michael Malmgren leaders after the first day of qualifying for the European Finals

Susanne Callin is the provisional number one qualifier in Top Fuel after the first day of qualifying for the European Finals, the fourth and final round of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship at Santa Pod Raceway in England. In Top Methanol Daniel Jedborn impressed with a great 5.30 seconds to take the lead after day one, while Jan Ericsson stormed to a great 5.81 seconds to take the lead in Pro Modified. In Pro Stock Michael Malmgren claimed the provisional number one qualifying position with a great 6.60 seconds ET.

Santa Pod Raceway welcomes the FIA European Championship grand finale

The FIA European Drag Racing Championship reaches its climax with the European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway, the traditional grand finale of the season. In all four categories the championship still has to be decided and although in three classes the points leader has a clear advantage, it’s drag racing so anything can happen. In Top Fuel Antti Horto is the clear favourite to claim his first FIA European title, while in Pro Stock Jimmy Ålund can collect his 12th (!) FIA European title in this category. In Pro Modified Jan Ericsson is the points leader, but the reigning champion can’t afford any mistake in England. In Top Methanol the title fight is open with only 12 points between leader and reigning champion Sandro Bellio and Hockenheim winner Jonny Lagg. All in all there are great prospects for a spectacular grand finale.

Susanne Callin, Michel Tooren, Jonny Lagg and Jimmy Ålund winners at Hockenheim

Susanne Callin raced to victory in the Top Fuel final of the NitrOlympX, round three of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship at the Rico Anthes Quartermile of the HockenheimRIng. It was the first win for Callin this season. In a close Pro Modified final Michel Tooren claimed the victory over Andres Arnover as a result of a better reaction time.  In Top Methanol Jonny Lagg defeated Sandro Bellio. In Pro Stock it was once again Jimmy Ålund who won the final, but the margin over Stefan Ernryd was only a few hundredths of a second.

Ida Zetterström, Jonny Lagg, David Vegter and Jimmy Ålund leaders after the first day of qualifying for the NitrOlympX

Ida Zetterström raced to the provisional number one qualifying position in Top Fuel at the first day of qualifying for the NitrOlympX, the third round  of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship at the Rico Anthes Quartermile of the HockenheimRing in Germany. In Top Methanol Jonny Lagg is the leader after two runs with 5.49 seconds. David Vegter claimed the provisional number one spot in Pro Modified with a great 5.93 seconds on his first run of the day, while in Pro Stock Jimmy Ålund is the provisional number one qualifier.

The NitrOlympX, round three of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship

The 2022 FIA European Drag Racing Championship is at the halfway point of the season and with the Summit Racing Equipment Internationals at Tierp Arena just finished, it’s time for the famous NitrOlympX at the Rico Anthes Quartermile of the HockenheimRing. Ida Zetterström (Top Fuel), Sandro Bellio (Top Methanol), Jan Ericsson (Pro Modified) and Robin Norén (Pro Stock) are the current leaders, but in Germany they will meet some tough and sometimes even new competition.

Ida Zetterström, Michael Gullqvist, Robin Norén and Daniel Jedborn winners at Tierp Arena

Ida Zetterström raced to victory in the Top Fuel final of the Summit Racing Equipment Internationals, round two of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship at Tierp Arena in Sweden. It was the first win for Zetterström in only her second race of her rookie season in Top Fuel. In a close Pro Modified final Michael Gullqvist claimed the victory over Marck Harteveld. In Top Methanol in an all Swedish final Daniel Jedborn won over Jonny Lagg. In Pro Stock Robin Norén surprised with a win in the semifinal over Jimmy Ålund and then took the win in the final as well.
