Jari Halinen surprises, as Micke Kågered retains his title

Jari Halinen and Micke Kågered

Reigning champion Micke Kågered entered the European Finals as the leader in the FIA European Top Fuel Championship. But after a dominant win at Tierp and a strong Euro Finals qualifying, Anita Mäkelä was more and more the favourite to win the title in eliminations. Despite that, Kågered did it again, won the rounds he needed to win, and claimed his second consecutive FIA Top Fuel title. Jari Halinen played an unexpected, but major role in the outcome of the championship and race. The Finn didn’t qualify for eliminations, but could enter the race as alternate, to defeat Mäkelä in the first round and win the final from just crowned champion Kågered.  Continue reading

Anita Mäkelä shines with victory and European record at Tierp Arena

Anita Mäkelä

Anita Mäkelä was in a class of her own in Top Fuel at the Scandinavian Internationals at Tierp Arena. In her Dom Lagana, Sami Lehtimäki and Tommi Haapanen tuned car, Mäkelä not only drove to victory, the Finnish fan favourite reset the European elapsed time record to a stunning 3.878 seconds, made six (!) consecutive 3 second passes and closed the gap to championship leader Micke Kågered to eighteen points! But Mäkelä was not the only one in the spot light, as more Top Fuel drivers had their best ever race at Tierp Arena.  Continue reading

Micke Kågered Nitro King of the Ring

Micke Kågered

The Hockenheimring must be Micke Kågered’s favourite racetrack. For the second consecutive year Kågered was the winner in Top Fuel, and the way the reigning champion did it was even more impressive: number one qualifier, fastest in all elimination rounds and low ET and top speed of the event! With his victory the Bahco Express driver extended his lead in the championship and took maximum advantage of the first round exit of his closest rivals Anita Mäkelä and Stig Neergaard.  Continue reading

Reigning champion Micke Kågered in command again

Micke Kågered

You don’t have to be the fastest to win races. It’s all about being fast enough in the right moment to defeat your opponent. And that’s exactly what Micke Kågered did at the FHRA Nitro Nationals at Alastaro. The reigning FIA European Top Fuel champion took a hole shot win against Janne Ahonen, saw Stig Neergaard run into problems with an engine explosion in the semi-finals, to have a bye-run in the final. With his victory the Bahco Express driver is the new leader in the championship after the Finnish round of the 2015 FIA European Drag Racing Championship.  Continue reading

FHRA Nitro Nationals – Preview FIA Top Fuel Dragster

Championship leader Anita Mäkelä

Preview FHRA Nitro Nationals July 2-5th – FIA European Drag Racing Championship round #3

FIA Top Fuel Dragster

11 drivers from five nations are on the entry list. Last year we saw a final between Anita Mäkelä Finland and Stig Neergaard, Denmark and one which ended in Neergaards favor. It was an event of tight racing with a low ET during the meeting of 4.32 sec. (Thomas Nataas). Continue reading

Even flames can’t hold back Anita Mäkelä from running 3.9 seconds

Anita Mäkelä

New personal bests in qualifying and an exciting first round of eliminations, that was what everybody expected to see, and got to see, at the state-of-the-art and ultra-fast Tierp Arena dragstrip. But the Saturday rain came back on elimination day, and with the Top Fuelers almost lined-up for the semi-finals, the race director had no other choice then to make an early end to the Tierp Internationals, the second round of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship. As the number one qualifier, first round winner, and again, only driver in the 3 seconds, Anita Mäkelä will go to Alastaro as the leader in the championship.  Continue reading

Class Review FIA Main Event – Top Fuel Dragster

Anita Mäkelä

Anita Mäkelä rules at Santa Pod FIA Main Event

Game, set and match in Top Fuel for Anita Mäkelä at the Main Event at Santa Pod Raceway, the opening round of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship. From the number one qualifying position Mäkelä reset the European ET record to 3.912 seconds in the first round of eliminations to claim victory with a string of 3-second runs. Although the rest of the Top Fuel field was close together, the Finnish crowd favourite was in a class of her own as she was the only one to run into the 3 seconds and break the 300 mph barrier.  Continue reading

Top Fuel Dragster – Main Event Preview

Micke Kågered

A fresh new start for Top Fuel this season. After the European Finals, multiple championship winning team Andersen Racing announced their retirement from the sport, and almost at the same time, their driver Thomas Nataas announced a break for at least one year. Then of course there were the problems with the disqualification of Nataas, weeks after the Euro Finals and a total review of the championship points another few weeks later. Then suddenly Micke Kågered was the 2014 FIA European Top Fuel champion. It was not the way the Swede wanted to win the title, so this season the Bahco driver wants to win his second Top Fuel crown at the track by going rounds and winning races. The professional Kågered team will start their title defence at the Main Event. Without Andersen Racing the title fight is pretty open and it’s hard to mention a number one favorite. The light turns green again, a new season starts with The Main Event

Only one week to go and the FIA European Drag Racing Championship 2015 kicks off with The Main Event at Santa Pod Raceway. After a long winter, drivers, teams and fans are looking forward to the start of the new season. New cars, new drivers, new colours and six exiting races to go. Only in Top Methanol Dragster will the title not be defended as Chris Polidano will skip this season, but although not all of them will start their season at Santa Pod, Micke Kågered, Johan Lindberg, Mattias Wulcan and Jimmy Alund will try to win a second consecutive FIA European title. But one thing is for sure, competition will be tough.
