Liam Jones, Jonny Lagg, Jimmy Ålund and Jere Rantaniemi leaders after the first day of qualifying at Tierp Arena

Liam Jones claimed the provisional number one qualifying position in Top Fuel at the first day of qualifying for the Summit Racing Equipment Internationals, round two of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship at Tierp Arena, Sweden. In Top Methanol Jonny Lagg stormed to a great 5.27 seconds and is the provisional leader, while in Pro Modified and Pro Stock Jere Rantaniemi and Jimmy Ålund recorded the quickest run and claimed the provisional number one qualifying position.

It was a long break after the opening round of the championship at Santa Pod Raceway, but now it’s only one week to go and the FIA European Drag Racing Championship kicks off the second part of the season with the Summit Racing Equipment Internationals at Tierp Arena, Sweden. Liam Jones (Top Fuel), Jonny Lagg (Top Methanol), Marck Harteveld (Pro Modified) and Jimmy Ålund/Robin Norén (Pro Stock) are the leaders in their respective categories, but with one race done and still three to go, the championship fight in all four classes is still fully open.

The 2025 drag racing season has kicked off for Michel Tooren and his team Pro Dutch Racing. It wasn’t an easy start, but with 5.812 seconds, a new personal best was set at Santa Pod Raceway, and Tooren finished the first round of the FIA European Championship with a third qualifying position and two consecutive 5.91-second ETs. The Pro Dutch Racing Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is now ready for the two July races of the Motorsport UK Pro Modified Championship.

Silvio Strauch showed up at The Main Event with a new Top Methanol dragster. The Engine Ghost Racing Team was plagued by severe tyre shakes for quite a few races with the wing breaking tyre shake at the 2024 European Finals as a low point. Time for some changes, although with racing in the same colours as before, not everyone will have taken notice of that during the opening round of the FIA European Championship at Santa Pod.

David Vegter and his team Vegter Pro Mod Racing immediately showed their speed again at the start of the new drag racing season. At Santa Pod Raceway, the ’67 Camaro recorded a 5.8-second ET on the first test runs, to reach the semi-finals with the quickest runs of the weekend and a second qualifying position a week later at the opening round of the FIA European Championship. Unfortunately, the speed could not be converted into a victory because rain brought an early end to the race.

After a sabbatical Marck Harteveld and his team Voodoo Hemi Racing are back on track and all competitors will know right now. During The Main Event at Santa Pod Raceway, the opening round of the FIA European Pro Modified Championship, Harteveld immediately claimed the number one qualifying position with 5.871 seconds! In the first round of eliminations Harteveld reset his personal best with the Voodoo Hemi Racing ’70 Plymouth Superbird to 5.859 seconds and advanced to the semifinals with a win in the quarter finals. With a great chance for Harteveld to claim a place in the final, the race had to be stopped due to rain. With the points gained at Santa Pod, Harteveld is the proud leader of the FIA European Pro Modified Championship.

Dennis Nilsson crossed the finish line on all of his four qualifying runs at The Main Event. De driver of the Autoart Top Fuel dragster was the leader after the first day of qualifying at Santa Pod and finished qualifying in third position. The opening round of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship finished for Nilsson in the semi-finals when he was defeated by home favourite Liam Jones. But even more important than the race result, was the fact that the Autoart team learned a lot. Co-crew chief Freddy Wendt tells the inside story of the team’s race weekend in England.

Marck Harteveld has added Tierp Arena to his programme and will therefore do the full FIA European Championship tour this season. After a sabbatical, the original plan of the Voodoo Hemi Racing driver was to only participate in the two FIA European Championship races at Santa Pod Raceway and the NitrOlympX at the Hockenheimring. Last weekend’s results made Harteveld change his mind.

Rain brought an early end to the eliminations of The Main Event, round one of the 2025 FIA European Drag Racing Championship at Santa Pod Raceway. Top Methanol had completed their semi-finals and Pro Stock and Top Fuel were in the staging lanes for their semi-finals and final respectively, when it started to rain. After two hours waiting, it was still drizzling and with the forecast of rain in the next hour, the race director was left no other choice than to cancel the event. At that moment Pro Modified had completed two elimination rounds.
