Autosport International is Europe’s largest indoor pre-season motorsport event and will be celebrating its 27th anniversary from 12th-15th January 2017 at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Drag racing will be represented by Santa Pod Raceway, as the home of the opening and final round of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship has its own stand at Autosport International. A new year, a new season on the way
The 2016 FIA European Drag Racing Championship was a great one, with three out of five titles decided in the penultimate runs of the season, the semi-finals of the European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway. But that was 2016, and with 2017 just started, it’s time to look ahead. Anita Mäkelä, Michael Gullqvist, Jimmy Ålund, Johnny Oksa and Jonny Lagg will wear the number one plates for the next nine months. The calendar for the FIA European Drag Racing Championship 2017 has been decided by FIA.

Hosting tracks (same like 2016) are Santa Pod Raceway UK (2 events), Tierp Arena, Sweden (2 events), Alastaro, Finland and HockenheimRing, Germany.

Anita Mäkelä clinches the title in a semi-final Top Fuel thriller
For almost ten minutes Anita Mäkelä must have had the déjà vu feeling of losing the FIA European Top Fuel title in one of the last runs of the season. The Finnish championship leader was defeated in the semi-final by Duncan Micallef, and with a win over Micke Kågered in the second semi-final, Stig Neergaard would gain the 20 points he needed to clinch the 2016 FIA European Top Fuel title. But the Dane ran into problems, was defeated by the 2015 champion and so, to the big relief of the Finnish team, the 2016 FIA European Top Fuel title went to Mäkelä. Duncan Micallef made headlines with his stunning 3.89 second runs, and Kågered finished the season on a high with a European Finals win. Continue reading
