Not business as usual for Michael Gullqvist in 2017

gullqvist_2016_champ.00

After an unfortunate period half way through the 2016 season, Michael Gullqvist took the FIA European Pro Modified Championship in style by dominating the European Finals and retaining his title. With five FIA European Pro Modified Championship titles in the last six years, Gullqvist is the man to beat in the ultimate doorslammer category of drag racing. But it will not be business as usual for the Swede, as he will have to do it without long time crew man ‘Turbo’ at the track, and with an almost brand new crew. Continue reading

Mats Eriksson and Michael Gullqvist

The FIA European Pro Modified championship was decided in the best possible way, in a direct confrontation between the two remaining championship contenders, Michael Gullqvist and Bruno Bader. In the semi-final the Swedish champion leader defeated the Swiss number two, to claim his second consecutive title. As Gullqvist was the only driver to break the 6-second barrier, was by far the quickest driver of the event with 5.88 seconds, and defeated Mats Eriksson in the final, the Swede deserved to win the title. Michael Gullqvist out with a red light in the first round of eliminations and his five main pursuers all winning and advancing to the quarter finals! The best possible scenario to catch up with the leader in the championship. But the reigning FIA European Pro Modified champion was saved by the thunderstorm and rain and as the eliminations had to be cancelled, the rest of the pack could only make up at most twenty points.  Continue reading

Michael Gullqvist once again proved at the Tierp Internationals that you don’t have to be the quickest all weekend to win a race. The reigning FIA European Pro Modified champion was the number ten qualifier, but stepped up in eliminations to run 5.9 seconds when he needed to most, and beat Mats Eriksson in the final to take the lead in the championship. But there were other drivers who impressed at Tierp Arena too, such as Åke Persson with 5.88 seconds and David Vegter with two 6.00-second runs.     Continue reading
