Ida Zetterström, Sandro Bellio and Jan Ericsson number one qualifiers after final qualifying for The Main Event
Ida Zetterström (Top Fuel), Sandro Bellio (Top Methanol) and Jan Ericsson (Pro Modified) claimed the number one qualifying positions at The Main Event at Santa Pod Raceway and will lead their respective categories into Sunday’s eliminations at the opening round of the 2022 FIA European Drag Racing Championship.
After a first day with several mechanical problems and aborted runs, the second and final day of qualifying for The Main Event, round one of the 2022 FIA European Drag Racing Championship at Santa Pod Raceway, saw many great runs and even a new European record in Pro Modified.
In Top Fuel rookie Ida Zetterström, from Åland, Finland, improved on her Friday performance, recorded 4.08 seconds and remained the number one qualifier. The Main Event is Zetterström’s first official race in an FIA championship.
Susanne Callin, from Sweden, and Antti Horto, from Finland couldn’t improve on their earlier performance and will enter tomorrow’s eliminations in second and third position.
The Pro Modifieds were the highlight of Saturday qualifying. There were numerous improvements in the two sessions and the qualifying order for eliminations changed almost every run. Star of the show was Jan Ericsson from Sweden. The reigning FIA European Pro Modified champion was the number 15 qualifier after day one, recorded a great 5.77 seconds new personal best in round three, to improve to a stunning 5.72 seconds new European record and the quickest Pro Mod run ever recorded in Europe in his final qualifying run.
David Vegter, from The Netherlands, and the number 14 qualifier after the two Friday runs, improved to a great 5.88 seconds in his last run of the day to jump into the number three position.
Friday’s leader, home favourite Nick Davies, improved to 5.87 seconds to claim the number two qualifying position. Bruno Bader improved to the number four qualifying position, only 0.0004 seconds short of the number three position. There were no fewer than eight drivers who recorded a run in the 5 seconds, while the number 13 qualifier still recorded a 6.20 seconds elapsed time. The eliminations in Pro Modified will once again be exciting.
In Top Methanol Sandro Bellio, from Belgium, improved to a great 5.48 seconds and remained the number one qualifier.
Linn Fløysvik, from Norway, who suffered all kinds of mechanical problems on Friday, was able to make two runs on Saturday. The Norwegian driver recorded a 5.96 seconds elapsed time and is the number two qualifier.
Eliminations for The Main Event at Santa Pod Raceway will start tomorrow morning, Sunday May 29.
