Stefan Gunnarsson, Johnny Oksa and Jimmy Alund new leaders, while Michael Gullqvist holds on for top spot at Scandinavian Internationals
An even bigger surprise then Duncan Micallef’s 3.91 seconds in Friday’s Top Fuel qualifying, was today’s stunning 3.90 seconds from Stefan Gunnarsson. With his personal best the Swedish driver raced to the number one qualifying position. In Top Methanol Funny Car Johnny Oksa is the new leader after day two of the Scandinavian Internationals at Tierp Arena, while Jimmy Alund changed positions with Bengt Ljungdahl and will lead the Pro Stock field into tomorrows eliminations of round five of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship. In Pro Modified, Michael Gullqvist improved to 5.88 seconds and stayed in the lead.
In Top Fuel, Stefan Gunnarsson surprised with a stunning 3.900 seconds to jump into the number one qualifying position. The Swedish driver reset his personal best with 0.3 seconds! Friday leader Duncan Micallef couldn’t improve on his earlier performance and dropped into second position.
There was also an improvement for Anita Mäkelä, but still the championship leader is third with 3.95 seconds, with Stig Neergaard in fourth position (3.97 seconds). Liam Jones is the first driver in the four seconds with 4.03. Reigning FIA European Top Fuel champion Micke Kågered will have to start eliminations from fifth position.
In Top Methanol Funny Car, championship leader Johnny Oksa improved to 5.64 seconds to take over the lead from Ari Pietilä, as the second Finn in the championship couldn’t improve on his Friday time. Local hero Mikael Larsson stayed in third with 6.27 seconds, while Danny Bellio is fourth and reigning champion Leif Andreasson a disappointing fifth..
In Pro Modified, no fewer then four drivers broke the 6-second barrier. Quickest was once again Michael Gullqvist, as the reigning champion recorded 5.88 seconds at 396 km/u to stay in the lead.
Ake Persson also had a major improvement with 5.91 seconds and stayed in the number two position. On his first run of the day, David Vegter stormed to 5.95 seconds, a new personal best and the first ever 5-second run for the Dutch Pro Modified driver. Vegter will enter tomorrow’s eliminations as the number three. Mats Eriksson improved to 5.98 seconds and is in fourth position, while Håkan Persson (6.03 seconds) is the new number five. Johan Lindberg dropped to sixth position.
In Pro Stock, Jimmy Alund stormed to 6.51 seconds to take over the number one qualifying position from Friday leader Bengt Ljungdahl. Reigning champion Thomas Lindström improved to 6.56 seconds and stayed in third position, while Richard Sundblom is the new number four.
In Top Methanol Dragster, Jonny Lagg is the only competitor this weekend. The Swedish driver recorded 5.45 seconds today.
Eliminations for the Scandinavian Internationals will start tomorrow morning.
