In Pro Modified Kev Slyfield surprised with a 6.15 seconds personal best to take the lead after two qualifying runs. In Pro Stock Bengt Ljungdahl is the provisional leader and in Top Methanol Dennis Habermann is the leader after day one. <\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Sunny weather conditions at the first day of qualifying for The Main Event, the opening round of the 2017 FIA European Drag Racing Championship at Santa Pod Raceway, England<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4305\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dragracingeurope.eu\/fiaedc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/05\/micallef_spme_q1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4305\" class=\"wp-image-9384 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dragracingeurope.eu\/fiaedc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/05\/micallef_spme_q1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dragracingeurope.eu\/fiaedc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/05\/micallef_spme_q1.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.dragracingeurope.eu\/fiaedc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/05\/micallef_spme_q1-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Duncan Micallef<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Reigning FIA Top Fuel champion Anita M\u00e4kel\u00e4 needed the second run to take over the lead from local hero Liam Jones who was the leader after the first round with 4.313 seconds. M\u00e4kel\u00e4 stormed to 4.129 seconds at 278.81 mph after the European record holder had to abort the first run with engine problems at the start line. Duncan Micallef from Malta raced to the number two position with 4.262 seconds and Jones dropped back to the provisional third position after the Rune Fjeld Motorsport driver couldn\u2019t improve on his earlier performance.
