But after a dominant win at Tierp and a strong Euro Finals qualifying, Anita M\u00e4kel\u00e4 was more and more the favourite to win the title in eliminations. Despite that, K\u00e5gered did it again, won the rounds he needed to win, and claimed his second consecutive FIA Top Fuel title. Jari Halinen played an unexpected, but major role in the outcome of the championship and race. The Finn didn\u2019t qualify for eliminations, but could enter the race as alternate, to defeat M\u00e4kel\u00e4 in the first round and win the final from just crowned champion K\u00e5gered.\u00a0<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At the Scandinavian Internationals, Anita M\u00e4kel\u00e4 showed her great form and that she was on a mission. With a dominant win, the Finnish fan favourite closed the gap to Hockenheim and Alastaro winner Micke K\u00e5gered to 18 points, less than the 20 points you get for a round win.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2915\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2915\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/kagered_2_ef_rev.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Micke K\u00e5gered<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And as M\u00e4kel\u00e4 also won the Main Event at the same track, she seemed to have a slight advantage over K\u00e5gered, especially when Dom Lagana (crew chief together with Sami Lehtim\u00e4ki and Tommi Haapanen) announced he would skip the US Nationals (where he had to work for team Torrence) to be with the team at Santa Pod.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2920\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2920\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/neergaard_ef_rev.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stig Neergaard<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Stig Neergaard was number three in the championship, but the Dane was 98 points behind leader K\u00e5gered, and so it would be a race between former Top Methanol rivals K\u00e5gered and M\u00e4kel\u00e4 .<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2918\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2918\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/makela_4_ef_rev.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"339\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anita M\u00e4kel\u00e4<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Qualifying<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stig Neergaard was the leader after that first session, but in the second qualifying in the dark, it was M\u00e4kel\u00e4 who stormed to a great 4.01 seconds to take over the lead. The number two in the championship was the only driver in the night session to run an almost full pass on the already too cold track.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2926\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2926\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gunnarsson_ef_rev1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"358\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stefan Gunnarsson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Stefan Gunnarsson was the surprising second after day one, and behind Jari Halinen championship leader K\u00e5gered was only in fifth position. But almost everything changed on day two. One thing didn\u2019t change, as M\u00e4kel\u00e4 improved to 4.010 seconds to stay in the number one position. But in the same run in the other lane K\u00e5gered stormed to 4.025 seconds to jump into the number two qualifying position. This meant that the two rivals could meet in the final for a traditional \u2018the winner takes it all\u2019.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2929\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2929\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/jones_ef_rev.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Liam Jones<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Liam Jones impressed again in his first Top Fuel season and reset his personal best to 4.05 seconds, to claim the number three qualifying position. Fourth was Urs Erbacher, while Stefan Gunnarsson qualified again for the eight car field, making his first season in Top Fuel even more perfect.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2919\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2919\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/micallef_ef_rev.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"347\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Duncan Micallef<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Behind Duncan Micallef, Stig Neergaard was only seventh, with Patrik Pers number eight and last qualifier. As at Tierp, Jari Halinen had all kind of small problems and couldn\u2019t make a full pass. With 5.7 seconds the Finn was not in the field. But suddenly things changed for the very disappointed Halinen, as Pers had engine damage and had to withdraw from eliminations, making way for Halinen to take part in eliminations as the first alternate.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2921\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2921\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/pers_ef_rev.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"339\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Patrik Pers<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2927\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2927\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/halinen_1_ef_rev.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jari Halinen<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2917\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2917\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/makela_3_ef_rev.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"339\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anita M\u00e4kel\u00e4<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Eliminations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Quarter finals<\/p>\n<p>Earlier than hoped and expected the championship was decided. As the number one qualifier M\u00e4kel\u00e4 had to face first alternate Halinen. And where everything went wrong in qualifying for Halinen, everything fell into place now, with the other way around for the title favourite. M\u00e4kel\u00e4 was away first and in front when her engine let go, and although she still recorded 4.13 seconds, it was not enough to beat the now trouble free 4.02 seconds of Halinen.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2916\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2916\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/kagered_3_ef_rev.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"358\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Micke K\u00e5gered<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With K\u00e5gered still in the line-up to make his run against Neergaard, the Bahco driver knew he had his second consecutive title. And to win it in style, K\u00e5gered stormed to 4.01 seconds to advance to the semi-finals.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2925\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2925\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/erbacher_ef_rev.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Urs Erbacher<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There was a big surprise in the first round when Erbacher had to face Gunnarsson and the rookie defeated the multiple champion on a big holeshot. Jones reset his personal best once again to bring it to 4.02 seconds, to defeat Rune Fjeld Motorsport teammate Micallef.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2924\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2924\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tf_semi_final_ef_rev.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Semi-final, Liam Jones and Micke K\u00e5gered<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Semi-finals<\/p>\n<p>In the semi-finals K\u00e5gered had to face Jones, and with a win, the British driver would take over the third position in the championship from Neergaard. But Jones ran into problems and so K\u00e5gered was in the final.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2928\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2928\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/halinen_3_ef_rev.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"378\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Semi-final, Jari Halinen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The second semi-final was already decided before the light turned green as Gunnarsson suffered engine problems and was pushed back, leaving the win to Halinen.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2922\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2922\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tf_final_ef_el1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"278\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The final<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Final<\/p>\n<p>In the final the surprises were still not over. Both Halinen and K\u00e5gered lost blower belts at half-track, but it was Halinen who crossed the finish line first, to take his first ever FIA European championship event win. An unexpected and glorious moment for the Finn who was so disappointed after qualifying. And so, with a first time winner and a champion, only happy faces at the Euro Finals podium.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2914\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2914\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/kagered_1_ef_rev.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Micke K\u00e5gered<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Championship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Behind champion K\u00e5gered, M\u00e4kel\u00e4 is the 2015 runner-up, and of course that\u2019s a disappointment for the Finnish racer who was so quick this season. Neergaard stayed in the number three position, but only three points behind the Dane Top Fuel rookie Jones finished his first season in fourth position.
