In her Dom Lagana, Sami Lehtim\u00e4ki and Tommi Haapanen tuned car, M\u00e4kel\u00e4 not only drove to victory, the Finnish fan favourite reset the European elapsed time record to a stunning 3.878 seconds, made six (!) consecutive 3 second passes and closed the gap to championship leader Micke K\u00e5gered to eighteen points! But M\u00e4kel\u00e4 was not the only one in the spot light, as more Top Fuel drivers had their best ever race at Tierp Arena.\u00a0<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Scandinavian Internationals at Tierp Arena was the fifth and penultimate round of the 2015 FIA European Drag Racing Championship. Helped by the perfect weather and track conditions at the state-of-the-art drag race facility, a record crowd of 37,000 spectators were offered an action packed and exciting race weekend. In Top Fuel it was one of the best races ever seen in Europe.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2778\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2778\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/makela.331.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"386\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anita M\u00e4kel\u00e4<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Qualifying<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With eleven entries qualifying for an eight car elimination ladder, the four qualifying sessions promised to be exciting, and that\u2019s exactly what happened. After a 3.99 seconds in her second run, Anita M\u00e4kel\u00e4 improved to a stunning 3.90 seconds on Saturday morning. \u00a0But even that was not the limit, as in her fourth qualifying M\u00e4kel\u00e4 stormed to an even more stunning 3.878 seconds at 504.20 kmh or 313.30 mph. A new European ET record and probably the fastest ever 1000-foot run in Europe. M\u00e4kel\u00e4 was naturally the number one qualifier.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2761\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2761\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/micallef.330.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"317\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Duncan Micallef<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Duncan Micallef qualified in the second spot, as the Maltese lion ran a new personal best with 4.009 seconds, and came close to his first ever 3 second pass, a sign for things to come in eliminations from the Rune Fjeld Motorsport driver.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2772\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2772\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/jones.452.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Liam Jones<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For championship leader Micke K\u00e5gered, a very consistent qualifying ended with 4.01 seconds in third position. Liam Jones was extremely happy, as the Top Fuel rookie reset his personal best twice, to end qualifying with 4.09 seconds in fourth position.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2765\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2765\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/pers.311.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Patrik Pers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Patrik Pers surprised with 4.10 seconds, and jumped into the number five position, just ahead of Stig Neergaard. The number three in the championship couldn\u2019t find the right set-up, and with 4.16 seconds the Dane was far away from his expected 3.9 second pass. Antti Horto was seventh, while Top Fuel rookie Stefan Gunnarsson qualified for eliminations with solid 4.21 second passes.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2763\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2763\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/neergaard.311.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stig Neergaard<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2769\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2769\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/halinen.301.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"330\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jari Halinen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A big surprise, but not in the way he wanted it, was Jari Halinen, who was number nine and first non-qualifier. The Finn, who was so consistent and quick earlier this season, was plagued by all kinds of problems and caused some, for him very unusual, oil downs.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2760\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2760\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/martensson.111.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bj\u00f6rn M\u00e5rtensson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Bj\u00f6rn M\u00e5rtensson was tenth qualifier, while Monica \u020cberg made a welcome return to the Top Fuel ranks. She could not upset the field, but with 4.39 seconds, the gap to the number eight qualifying position was only 0.18 seconds.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2764\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2764\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/oberg.300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monica \u020cberg<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2768\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2768\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/gunnarsson.350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"332\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stefan Gunnarsson<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Eliminations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Quarter finals<\/p>\n<p>In another 3.9 second pass M\u00e4kel\u00e4 never gave Gunnarsson the idea he had a chance against the Finnish chicken farmer, who was on a mission. Micallef proved that his qualifying was no fluke, as in another 4.00 seconds he defeated Horto.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2770\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2770\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/horto.102.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Antti Horto<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jones\u00a0 advanced to the semi-finals again after a win against Pers. K\u00e5gered had to face one of his most important championship contenders, Neergaard. The Swede defeated the Dane, who saw his chances of winning the 2015 championship reduced to almost zero.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2771\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2771\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/jones.330.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Liam Jones<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Semi-finals<\/p>\n<p>In the semi-final M\u00e4kel\u00e4 had to face Jones. Nobody was surprised anymore to see the next 3.9 seconds appear on the score board, and as Jones slowed down to 4.20 seconds, the number two in the championship advanced to the final.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2775\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2775\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/kagered.360hf.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"340\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Semi-final<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But would she meet championship leader K\u00e5gered, or second quickest driver of the Scandinavian Internationals, Micallef. The Rune Fjeld tuned Micallef did it again, and in 4.02 seconds he defeated K\u00e5gered. And so Tierp Arena got the final it could only have dreamed of, the number one and two qualifier, and with a string of 3.9 (M\u00e4kel\u00e4) and 4.0 (Micallef) runs, the quickest and fastest drivers of the meeting.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2766\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2766\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/tf_final_sci.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"291\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The final<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Final<\/p>\n<p>In the final both drivers and teams proved how well they controlled the perfect Tierp Arena conditions, as both repeated their previous performance. Micallef stormed to another 4.01 seconds (his third 4.0 in a row and fourth of the weekend), and although the difference was not that big, with 3.98 seconds M\u00e4kel\u00e4 made her sixth consecutive 3 second run and took the win.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2767\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2767\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/tf_podium_sci.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"521\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anita M\u00e4kel\u00e4 and Duncan Micallef<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/edrspro.com\/?attachment_id=2759\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-nsm-1-2759\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/fiaedc.edrspro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/makela.517.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"380\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anita M\u00e4kel\u00e4 and team<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Championship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With her win and the semi-final exit of K\u00e5gered, M\u00e4kel\u00e4 closed the gap to the championship leader to only eighteen points! With twenty points for every elimination round win, the championship can be decided in the last run of the European Finals. What a climax that would be. Neergaard is third, but already 98 points behind K\u00e5gered.
