{"id":17865,"date":"2020-06-26T14:59:32","date_gmt":"2020-06-26T13:59:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dragracingeurope.eu\/fiaedc\/?p=17865"},"modified":"2020-06-26T14:59:32","modified_gmt":"2020-06-26T13:59:32","slug":"fia-european-drag-racing-championship-season-cancelled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dragracingeurope.eu\/fiaedc\/2020\/06\/26\/fia-european-drag-racing-championship-season-cancelled\/","title":{"rendered":"FIA European Drag Racing Championship Season Cancelled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dragracingeurope.eu\/fiaedc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Fia_european_drag_racing_championship_logo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17891\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dragracingeurope.eu\/fiaedc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Fia_european_drag_racing_championship_logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dragracingeurope.eu\/fiaedc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Fia_european_drag_racing_championship_logo.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.dragracingeurope.eu\/fiaedc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/Fia_european_drag_racing_championship_logo-300x293.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Official statement from the FIA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In light of the current COVID-19 crisis and due to its direct consequences, the 2020 edition of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship has been cancelled.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The original, five-round, calendar was due to start on the penultimate weekend of May at Santa Pod Raceway in the United Kingdom before moving onto Sweden\u2019s Tierp Arena for the event scheduled for early June.<\/p>\n<p>The championship was then meant to resume with another event at Tierp in mid-August, before moving south to Germany\u2019s Hockenheim Ring two weeks later and returning to Santa Pod Raceway for the season finale in mid-September.<\/p>\n<p>Following the cancellation of the first three rounds of the championships due to the ongoing pandemic, a decision to cancel this year\u2019s season was taken at the recent meeting of the FIA Drag Racing Commission.<\/p>\n<p>With not enough events left to maintain the sporting integrity of the championship for this year, the commission was left with no other option than to confirm the cancellation of the 2020 FIA European Drag Racing Championship. Individual events may still be held at the discretion of their organisers, albeit as a non-championship or national competition.<\/p>\n<p>Lars Pettersson, President of the FIA Drag Racing Commission, said: \u201cWe have to consider what was best for each of the championship stakeholders and make the responsible choice. Unfortunately, this championship has been hit hard by the ongoing pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrag racing faces challenges that other FIA disciplines do not. Given that our events cannot go ahead in wet weather conditions, proposing autumn dates would mean an increased risk of further cancellations. Similarly, holding events behind closed doors is also not an option for our venues, as they rely on the income from ticket sales.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast but not least, we have to be mindful of our competitors who in the vast majority are self-funded.
